Northland Anniversary Day, also known as Auckland Anniversary Day, is celebrated every year on the Monday closest to January 29. In 2024, this special public holiday will take place on January 29. This event is significant in the northern region of New Zealand’s North Island, particularly in the historical province of Auckland. It marks the arrival of William Hobson, a British Royal Navy officer who would later become New Zealand’s first Governor and co-author of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

A Brief History of Northland Anniversary Day

William Hobson first arrived in New Zealand in 1837, sent by Governor Bourke. His impressive report upon returning led to his appointment as Consul to New Zealand in December 1838. After careful consideration, he accepted the position on February 14, 1839, and was tasked with establishing a British colony in New Zealand. As Lieutenant Governor, Hobson first traveled to Sydney to meet with Governor Gipps before arriving in the Bay of Islands on January 29, 1840. He officially landed the next day, where he proclaimed his appointment and set a meeting for February 5, coinciding with the drafting of the Treaty of Waitangi.

During that meeting, Hobson engaged with Maori chiefs, and it was here that 40 chiefs signed the Treaty, which transferred sovereignty to the British Crown while ensuring their land and possessions would be respected. Three months later, Hobson claimed British sovereignty over New Zealand and designated Auckland as the capital. In May 1841, New Zealand transitioned from being a protectorate of New South Wales to a Crown Colony, resulting in Hobson’s promotion to Governor and Commander-in-Chief. Northland Anniversary Day was officially established in 1842.

On January 26 of that year, Governor Hobson announced in the New Zealand Government Gazette that January 29 would be a general holiday to celebrate the colony’s second anniversary. However, the holiday was later adjusted to the nearest Monday to January 29.
