Julian Felipe Day

Julian Felipe Day is an annual celebration that takes place on January 28 to honor the legacy of Julian Reyes Felipe, a revered composer and revolutionary figure. Born in what is now Cavite City, he earned the affectionate nickname “Master” from his students due to his dedication as a music teacher and composer. Under the leadership of then-President Emilio Aguinaldo, Felipe was named Director of the National Band of the First Philippine Republic. His early education took place in public schools in Cavite and Manila, where he showcased his remarkable musical talents. Not only did he master the piano and organ, but he also served as an organist at St. Peter’s Parish Church, which helped him refine his musical skills.

Julian Felipe Day Historical Background

Celebrated on January 28, Julian Felipe Day marks the birth anniversary of the man who composed the Philippine national anthem, ‘Lupang Hinirang.’ Felipe, born in 1861 to parents Justo Felipe and Victoria Reyes in Cavite City, received his foundational education in Cavite and Binondo. His musical prowess was nurtured by a Recollect priest who employed him as an organist at St. Peter’s Parish Church. Among his celebrated works are ‘Aurora,’ ‘Amorita Danza,’ ‘Cintas y Flores,’ ‘Motete al Santisimo,’ and ‘Reina de Cavite,’ with these compositions earning him a silver medal and a place in the Sta. Cecilia Musical Society in 1895.

Felipe fought alongside the “13 Martyrs of Cavite” against Spanish colonizers in 1896. Upon his release, he joined the forces of General Emilio Aguinaldo. As the First Philippine Republic came into being, Aguinaldo appointed Felipe to direct the National Band, commissioning a new march for the proclamation of independence. ‘Marcha de Nacional Filipina,’ initially titled ‘Marcha de Filipina Magdalo,’ was played on June 12, 1898, by the Banda San Francisco de Malabon during the declaration of Philippine independence and while raising the country’s flag. The National Assembly later declared this composition the national anthem on September 6, 1938. The anthem drew inspiration from Spain’s ‘Marcha Real,’ ‘La Marcha Rebelde,’ and a poem titled ‘Filipinas’ by Jose Palma. Felipe remained in Manila until his passing on October 2, 1944. The Congress of the Philippines declared January 28 as Julian Felipe Day on September 1, 1994, through Republic Act 7805. On this day, tributes include adorning his bust with flowers and hosting ceremonies with speeches, songs, and violin performances to honor his musical contributions.
