National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is recognized each year in March. This observance was previously known as Mental Retardation Awareness Month, but the name was changed to eliminate the negative implications associated with the term ‘retardation’. The initiative aims to highlight the various chronic conditions that can impede communication, mobility, and learning, while also fostering job opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, helping them to lead enriching lives.

Since 1979, March has been a dedicated month for acknowledging the challenges faced by those with developmental disabilities, raising awareness about the related chronic conditions, and promoting opportunities for these individuals. Along with the renaming of the month, there has been a shift in the terminology used by organizations that advocate for the rights of those with developmental disabilities to reflect a more compassionate approach.

Developmental disabilities are ongoing conditions that stem from physical and mental challenges, often emerging in childhood. Some common examples include motor disorders that influence movement, learning disabilities like dyslexia and dyscalculia, autism spectrum disorders, and cerebral palsy. When these disorders affect a child’s overall development, it’s known as Global Developmental Delay. Unfortunately, individuals with these disabilities are at a higher risk of exploitation and abuse, often leading to psychological issues as a response to trauma. The goal of this month is to shed light on the struggles faced by these individuals and to empower them in their journey.

Additionally, the month serves to encourage the public to better understand those with developmental disorders, including those who might display challenging or aggressive behaviors as a means of expressing their feelings.
