John Wilce, the first director of Ohio State’s program, emphasized that every student should have the chance to experience the social and moral benefits of being part of an athletic team.

Later on, the University of Michigan established the first recreational sports facility in the country. In 1919, Elmer Mitchell was appointed as the first Director of Intramural Sports, a position he held for over two decades, earning recognition as the father of intramural sports. Between 1928 and 1929, he authored significant works such as “Intramural Athletics” and “Intramural Sports.” In 1946, Elmer inspired a P.E. graduate student named William Wasson, who went on to research intramural sports programs at historically black colleges and universities across the nation after securing funding from the Carnegie Foundation.

In February 1950, Wasson convened the Intramural Summit at Dillard University, which brought together representatives from twenty universities and colleges to form the National Intramural Association, the predecessor to NIRSA today.
