Scotch Tape Day

Scotch Tape Day is observed annually on January 31. The creation of Scotch tape originated from a challenge faced by car painters who needed to paint vehicles in multiple colors but struggled with keeping sections free from paint. This issue led Richard Drew to develop Scotch tape. Today, this handy invention serves countless purposes, sticking together various items.

A Brief History of Scotch Tape Day

Back in the 1920s, Richard Drew was employed at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, which primarily produced sandpaper. While delivering sandpaper samples to auto body shops, he noticed the difficulties car painters encountered when working with two-tone paint jobs. At that time, painters relied on surgical adhesive tapes or library glues to hold newspapers in place while painting. Unfortunately, these materials left behind sticky residue that often pulled off paint when removed. This observation motivated Drew to find a better solution.

Drew created a masking tape made from crêpe paper, cabinetmaker’s glue, and glycerin. This new tape adhered well to cars and came off cleanly without damaging the paint, eventually being marketed as Scotch Masking Tape. By the 1950s, the company introduced a mascot named “Scotty McTape,” who was even recognized as a member of the Clan Wallace, the same clan as William Wallace. Scotty sported red tartan and Wallace Hunting green plaid, although he was phased out in the early 1970s. Today, the green plaid can still be seen on Scotch labels.

Over time, other manufacturers began producing clear adhesive tape, yet many continue to refer to it as Scotch Tape. For his innovative work, Drew was honored with induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
